Literature Circles Reading Response

Copy down a quote from a character and explain why you think it's meaningful. What does it suggest about this character's personality? Personal qualities? Etc. Explain your thinking.

I found a meaningful quote from Brent and this is what he says, “You live on the streets long enough and it changes the way you look... and the way you look at things”. This quote shows you that even though he may look scary he is also very thoughtful and wise. It gives a you an idea of how long Brent has been out on the streets and what he has been through. He is very tough and you can tell by his quote. I think what he meant by “ it changes the way you look” was that it makes you look tougher because of all the hard challenges that you have to go through while living on the streets. It's dirty work and it's also hard to take a shower when you're supposed to because they don't have anywhere to take it. Also, the scars you get from living on the streets, it's really dangerous and street kids get into a lot of fights and he probably got into a lot of fights for the first couple of weeks because he probably didn't have any money, so he fought for the stuff he needed. What he meant by “ ...and the way you look at things” was when you live on the streets for a long time you see a lot of things that you probably shouldn't see as a kid and it just changes the way you look at things. Like when Ashley said that there a some cops who would actually hit you and she even saw it herself and Brent was a part of them and he also saw it. People who live on the streets get into a lot of violent fights too and that's another thing that kids shouldn't see or be a part of.

What were your feelings and first impressions after reading the opening chapters of this book? Explain.

At the beginning I was sort of bored because all the book was talking about was how they were begging for money. It was all about her begging money from people and it was boring because there's nothing really interesting about that. When she was talking to the unnamed perverted man I didn't realize what he was doing until she started screaming at him. I was, at first, confused, but then I realized what he meant by “quick favour”. First I thought it was the guy who worked for Sketches because he knew that she lived on the streets and he was asking for her age, so I thought she was perfect for the program, but he was talking about something else. After I read the first chapters of this book I think that anything can happen. That's why I think that she might think about killing her stepfather , you don't know what to expect from this book. The beginning really surprised me and if that was just the beginning, then I wonder what will happen during the climax.
